Killer Instinct Dual Board

Hi!

Sorry for slight off-topic.

Question about the test rom, can that be used to debug sound problems with the board? Is this test rom somehow different from the default diagnostics menu?

After some debugging, I suspect the issue with my board might be with something between the CPU and the sound chip (ADSP-2105).

¡Hola!

Those pcbs fail from the TL084 preamplifier and the AD1851N. You can use an audio signal tracker or an oscilloscope to see if the signal enters the TL084 preamplifier and leaves it to the tda amplifier.
If the signal does not enter the tl084 preamplifier then your problem is before that section and that section is the AD1851N and nearby components

Right. In my case the issue is that I can hear sounds but they are out of order, here is a video about the issue . No music is played.

Ok, seems to be some another thing, but seems to be easy repair, if you need help i can repair for You total free just parts no problem, if you interested, send me prívate message

Is this project dead? Last words from Neku were on may 20th .. Almost 7 months ago.. I know patience is the key, but I can't wait to dual boot KI/KI2! Hoping by new years we have good news!

Hello,

I am sorry for the lack of news given during the past few months.
It's been a crazy time for me, between the house renovation work and the projects with my company time flew more quickly than i anticipated.

I have made some progress on finalising this project but it's not there yet.
It still on a dedicated bench in my office and pass by it almost everyday and hope to find time to finish it.

Things are starting to cool down a bit so i hope to be able to continue working on it during Q1 2025.
I will take some days off end of january or begining of february, rest assure i will dedicate time to get it done during that time !

TLDR: It's not dead !

Considering some people are asking 1k+ for "normal" ones (run a search on the marketplace), that doesn't sound that bad?
Exactly, sold 5-6 of them (reg board with SSD upgrade) for around 1200-1500 USD a piece. Kept a board for myself to install the dual mod at some point for my own cab but downsizing the collection considerably. Helped me fund the new pinball addiction lol

You don't need this board to dual boot KI1/KI2 - if you go back to the beginning of the thread, its fairly easy to get it going with off the shelf parts.

Neku should make it simpler and easier and prettier, but yeah... :)
Thanks a bunch! I came pretty late to the party and I actually had not read the entire thread.. I thought Neku's solution was the only one so far. I ordered 27c801 roms and a dual CF board , but was shipped a board with only 1 CF connector populated. Haven't heard from the seller yet.. I then decided to read the entire thread its only then I realized that DogP solved the IDE issue a few years ago 😅. I also saw the solution with the SD to CF card with dual SD adapter, which I've ordered but shipping is going to take a while for the dual SD. I flashed the combined roms and made a circuit on perfboard with a ESP8266 I had lying around. The ESP monitors P1 Low kick and if held down during power up it closes the relay, which triggers KI2's ROMs, then the input pins becomes high impedance and so it doesn't affect the input for the game. I was afraid the delay in the relay closing might be take too long and that it wouldn't switch fast enough to boot KI2 but it works. Now I hope it will also be fast enough for the dual SD card adapter but until I receive it I can't say if it will work. Fingers crossed. If it don't , it will either be a physical switch , wait for Neku to release his bootrom + combined images or since my arcade cabinet has a 8 in 1 jamma selector I'll change my setup so that the previous board triggers the relay and prepares the KI board with KI2 before switching to it. I'm probably never going to play KI2 anyways, for the few minutes I just played it I found it really doesn't have KI1's charm and I'd have to learn all the combos.. The announcer is so much more intense in the first one.. For anyone curious , my jamma switcher has the following games : Mortal Kombat , Mortal Kombat II + , Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 + , A sega master with a flashcart containing all games (controls are both mapped to the arcade sticks and I have original controllers plugged in at the same time and also 2 light guns also plugged , reset and pause are the Start buttons and the 3D glasses are also permanently connected), Killer Instinct 1 and now 2! , TMNT , Tetris and finally a Neo Geo MVS also with a flashcart. I have a mortal kombat 4 board but for some reason it died while in storage. I spent hours trying to figure out the issue but to no avail. 2 LEDs are locked on solid with what seems to be no activity anywhere at all on the board. I still have hopes to one day revive it.

Anyways, thanks to all those involved in making dual boot a pretty easy process , it's really appreciated. I'll report one I get the dual SD card switcher to let you guys know if a relay is fast enough to make dual boot by holding a button before power on work.

I've read through this but it's still unclear to me if the mod is possible with a dedicated KI2 pcb? or must you have a KI or KI2 conversion board from a KI?

I was hoping it could be done with a dedicated KI2 board as I like KI2 better but on occasion would like to play KI once in a while.

Believe my KI2 is a dedicated board.

Thanks

I have made available patched roms to be able to run either games on either boards thus you can do the mod on whatever board you have available.

Go back a few pages to post #475 where Neku gives some more specific details. Follow the KI1 & KI2 any-board ROMs link in his signature for the files.

Hello, I only recently found out about this project - great work!

I have two boards I'm trying to repair. When I try the Neku test ROM, it constantly resets after drawing the 'KI' and seemingly starting to draw the text. I know the answer might be bad RAM, or bad CPU pins but I wonder if there is any hint from the reset being at this specific part of the test program boot sequence? (Like - maybe it hits the first vblank here, does an IRQ and then the stack RAM is bad so it crashes?).

Thanks!

there's like 800 pages on this thread now, do you know where I can obtain this test rom?
