[FS] RECO PCB - JAMMA button remapping & rapid-fire device

The RECO PCB V5.1 will be released tomorrow!

This version brings several quality-of-life upgrades:
  • It now handles the controls, too, allowing you to rotate the controls or enable 4-way joystick gate emulation (plus many other features known from the HAS).
  • Support for an external OLED display as an optional accessory.
  • Support for an external rotary encoder in the form of a standard Sanwa-style button as an optional accessory.

The rotary encoder enables quick adjustment of rapid-fire rates. It also supports two independent custom user-defined rapid-fire presets (A and B), adjustable from 1 to 35 Hz with 0.1 Hz precision. Additionally, the encoder can be used as a left/right directional controller for certain games, such as Puzzle Bobble.

The video demonstrates how I first switch between the standard VSync-synchronized rapid-fire rates (1 to 6) and then play around with custom asynchronous rapid-fire presets A and B.

How this works:

To enable Rapid-Fire on specific buttons, press and hold the desired button(s) and turn the rotary encoder’s knob clockwise. This sets the rate from 1 to 6.

Turning beyond 6 switches to one of the two customizable Rapid-Fire rates (A or B). Custom rates A and B are adjusted by turning the rotary encoder while no buttons are pressed.

To switch between rate A and rate B adjustment, press and hold the rotary encoder button and move the joystick left (for rate A) or right (for rate B).

To access the Rotary Encoder Menu, press the Rotary Encoder and the START button at the same time.

You can navigate the Rotary Encoder Menu using the buttons on the RECO PCB, or with the joystick up/down directions and buttons on your control panel.
Button 1: Enter / Confirm / Change value.
Button 2: Exit the Rotary Encoder menu and turn off the OLED screen.
Button 3: Go back to Main Menu.
Wow ❤️❤️😱

Awesome that the rotary can be used for some games too! Unexpected feature I’m looking forward to the most… hopefully more games get added to the arsenal.

HI, is it also possible to assign on game button onto two different physical buttons?

Yes, you can map two or more different physical buttons to the same button output. So pressing either physical button will trigger the same action in the game. You can even set a different rapid-fire rate for each button clone.

Super useful for games that have a charge shot or where weapon switching would require charge for certain weapons but rapid fire for others. Lot of games fall under this demand.

so if I understood correctly, this can do what the Brizzo rotary adapter does, but with a usb only spinner input?
that's pretty cool! (wish I could connect seimitsu spinners too😁)

any chance the 5.2 could have an Ecology/Eco Fighters spinner mode? the homebrew pcb for this is hard to find, emulating that would go a long way for sure ^^

For us older HAS users, any chance you can make more minidin to vga adapter? sure would come in handy ^^

congrats on the great release! there should be a reco in each cab :)

This is such a brilliant idea, I totally forgot about this awesome game!

I will be updating all RECO units :) The system allows for some fine-tuning options. You can adjust how quickly the rotary encoder registers the next tick (sensitivity), and also how long the game sees the joystick or button as pressed after each rotary tick (hold time). Have fun!

Edit: In this mode, you can shoot with Button 2 as usual, or press the rotary encoder button to shoot. However, I recommend enabling the "Sticky Button" feature of the RECO, as it turns the button into an ON/OFF switch, allowing you to lock Button 2 with a single press and focus on steering the ship/rotary weapon.

Important information: The RECO V5.1 and accessories use USB connectors for convenience only. However, they are proprietary to the RECO V5.1 and are not standard USB devices. They mustn't be mixed with actual USB cables or accessories.

While you’re there. What about Forgotten Worlds :)
I don't have the Forgotten Worlds PCB to test, so I'm not sure how well it will work. This mode is labeled "Experimental" and maps the rotary encoder to the kick harness connector:
  • Clockwise rotation = P1B6
  • Counter-clockwise rotation = P2B6
Please don't expect too much from it, it's a last-minute bonus feature :)

Puzzle loop2 might be a good one to check too (it also uses another interface pcb(official one this time)

@RGB 😱 OMG dude, are you serious😭 thank you so much for checking it out, this means a lot !
oh, so it's just a usb connector, not protocol.
...so you mean I can wire a physical adapter to adapter the lines of a seimitsu spinner or a capcom spinner+push/Hursit Kraken repro? (is this christmas yet?? sure feels like it 😁)
(snk ls-40 support might be awesome too, but my guess is that there's too much pins)

reco5.3 might need a port for player2, just saying😇

(I already placed and order for other things yesterday, and I'm tapped out😅 so I'll have to wait for a later batch, I'll keep using my 4.0 recos till then^^)

again thank you so much for your work, you really make our hobby so much more practical!🙏

Wonderful! I actually need three autofire rates with one of them fine tuned. The amount of really useful functions is impressive!

Any chances for direct bank transfer from Germany to "Europe"?

Hey, no worries, this is a fun addition, thanks for the idea!
I'm not sure about the spinners; they could probably work with a proper connection, but the code was written for this specific or similar mechanical rotary encoder, so it might not be optimal for the spinners. I'll try to put my hands on one of those and play around.

Thank you! Bank transfer is fine. Please reach out through the contact form on my website, and we can arrange the details via email.

Wondering if this will allow me to gain access to my 4th button on my Neo Geo MVS single slot JAMMA PCB if I connect the CPS2 kick harness in my candy cab to the Reco?
