Having some troubles with my first Netdimm at Naomi

Idk europa easy and cheap, usa sometimes not easy and not cheap, and if you do it wrong, you have to pay customs xD

So... Idk, sell itas broke and buy another will be the better option.

I will test voltage again, but i think, its all fine, cause naomi is working like a machine and the only problems i still have is that i have no network options, so i asked myself, it is broke? Software broke? Hardware broke? But not that one of the cables have not enough voltage...

You could buy a regular dimm and then use the top board from the faulty netdimm.

Oh bro, why you thinking that the down pcb is broke? :)
The bottom pcb is where I would start looking and you should be able to isolate which pcb in the netdimm has the issue with a known working dimm as @nem suggested. If a good bottom board does not get the netdimm working you know the issue is in the top board.

Europe easy post … usa easy too I guess
  • Posting from UK to Germany sucks! - I bought a 5 GBP part, had to pay 12 GBP for shipment (royal mail), had to pay 10 EUR to customs. That is 30 EUR for a 6 EUR part :)
  • Posting from "NON-EU" to germany sucks because of shipment costs (50-100 Euro in shipment if you dont want to use snail mail).
  • Since this is a repair it "should" be easy go get through customs (in my humble opinion i wouldnt ship to uk, but look for somebody who is within eu. Spain, France, Poland, Germany... something like that)
I am in germany. I was trying to help him before, but mickschen blocked me because he thought i was not helping him (i think it was a misunderstanding). He always could have send me his netdimm / noami and i would have tested it with parts of my working noami setup. - Anyhow. Looking forward that you figure it out. Really sucks to see dead / non working noami hardware.

I read a lot of problem (in the past couple of months) with the netdimm not recognized in the setup screen. Not sure what the real cause it, but i think it is one of the pins on the connection and/or a faulty bios. In one case i had small plastic pieces in the connector of the naomi, which caused the problem, but did not trigger the mediaboard failure error.

I like your thinking and I’m going to go down that way with my faulty two …

Clean all contacts / connections
And try with diffrent bios .
I have new dimms to put in as well .

Would be great to get to bottom of this as a lot of these failed boards out there in the wild

Are you planning on fixing the broken one? If you are not planning on fixing it DM me and maybe we can work something out for it. It should be fixed. The more broken dimms are thrown out the more the price goes up.

From my limited experience with dimm boards and a bit of input from @nem, there seems to be a few things that go wrong with them.
1. The buffer chips go (thanks @nem that saved me a bunch of time fixing one recently).
2. The connectors seem to be made of some polymer of birthday cake, chalk and glass, which has a really limited life span (this goes for the connectors on the Naomi as well). Once they are a little broken and then plugged in bad stuff happens. Lots of people seem to look at them not knowing their true chemical composition, see they are a little banged up and try plugging them in thinking they will be ok.
3. The bios chips have bad/broken connections not sure if this is because of the solder used or because people have tried replacing the bios with a newer one, failed and listed it as "not tested".
4. Sega seem to have attempted to lay the thinnest possible traces. Once the clear top coat is dissapeared, traces get eaten real quick. This goes for all naomi stuff. The boards look nice but are a pain to work on. I read on this forum that someone (can't remember who) was using a fibreglass eraser. This may be common but I had never before heard of it and since I got one naomi trace repair is much easier.

I pulled a regular dimm and netdimm out of a box I stored them in for 15+ years and got them both working and have repaired another one.or two recently. That info is a combination of what I learnt in the process and what I was told to look out for.

I work with some stuff like isopropanol and citro acid :)
I know these connectors from Dreamcast, very sensible things.
I check power from different psus....
...

The only thing i cant do is to reset some settings to get at ip adress or something like that...

So guys, i got another netdimm. And it could work.

I have dimm and network settings. The wipi raspberry find this netdimm in network and its online.

But i cant play a game till now and have some questions again.

So when i load any game i see error 31 "this game is not acceptable by main board." What does it mean? Its a secure key fail? I jumpered my naomi from Australia to japanese, it changed nothing, still get error 31.

So then, i have 2 original Virtua Striker 3 keys but, i cant load some games from wipi to naomi cause the settings are telling "no dimms avaiable for this system" ... What does it mean?

So i think, i will update this netdimm from 3.03 to the latest recommended version and may it will fix some bugs or Inkompatibility...

This another netdimm has 512mb.

What kind of protection key are you using on your NetDIMM ?

I wrote it before. At first, today, i tried a original ke, for Virtua Striker (and after that from Virtua Tennis), then i tried this zero key:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/22481595088...v29_kvgt_u&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I asked the seller how i put it in rightway he told me which is front and back.

So i will update the dimm then cause i think, if the 0 key is broke, then minimum one of the original Keys should work. And i dont know, why some games cant load with the system fail i wrote before....

I tried to update via wipi but after reboot i got a error 31 too...

Mhhhh then ill try via pc then
