Would it be able to also mimic the marquee lights for games 1-4? If so, would it be some kind of custom solution or could it work with the original EL panel hardware?
mmmm ehhhh mimic what?

Not sure how the lights are chosen, but If I get information about it should be pretty straight forward :)

However, I don't know if people are ready to pay more juste for this option, but I'm definitely ready !
What do you mean with that?
I'm checking if this makes sense from a cost/playbility point of view. If that's the case I can install a battery so it will hold in the DDR the last game loaded for a period of time (similar to mobile phones, so a week or so).
What do you guys thinks?
It was concerning this point, i think this extra-cost (if i'm understand what you said) is necessary to built the best multi-mvs and i'm totally ready to pay more for all the features (you maybe understand the contrary, excuse my bad english :) ).
Gotcha!

Sounds pretty nifty, but I guess rules out the AES compatibility?
That means that If I go ahaed with this desing there will be a version for AES and another for MVS. In any case a cart supporing both AES / MVS can get tricky, so after all the research I've done I'm not very inclined to it.

Basically, if you can store 4 games, then can they be designated somehow as games 1, 2, 3, and 4? Which game you're currently on would trigger a signal to the marquee lights and light up marquee 1, 2, 3, or 4 based on which game is selected at the time. Someone else would be better at explaining the technical side of things...my cabinet doesn't even have all the hardware needed for that to run. Hence my thread here. Not the best video, but here's the basic functionality when the select game button is pressed on a multi-slot:

I thought that was a custom project. I've owned 3 different model NeoGeo candy cabs (4 in a few weeks here), and 2 woodies, all of them had a single flourescent bulb behind all 4 mini marquees. If there's a cabinet that has game selection lights stock, I'd like to learn more about it!

I think I've seen those. I'm not sure from where are coming the signals that indicate which slot is chosen and what type of sygnal it is (voltage, protocol, etc)

Many dedicated cabinets just have fluorescent bulbs because the original EL panels died, probably back when they were still in arcades making money. Mine doesn't have a bulb at all but does have the board that controls the EL panels. The custom project you're referring to is either the fully custom LED replacement, or the more-or-less simple EL panel replacement, that still uses the original hardware - you'd just be replacing the EL sheets that have died.

I don't think I've seen a manual specific to the EL hardware, but they are mentioned in the various MVS cabinet manuals (example). Anything that references MV-ELA or MV-ELB is talking about the hardware that does all that. If any of your MVS cabs had a little PCB behind the marquee, above the monitor and you didn't know what that was all about, that was part of the lighting controls :)

I think I've seen those. I'm not sure from where are coming the signals that indicate which slot is chosen and what type of sygnal it is (voltage, protocol, etc)
As for the signals to the lights, I'm not sure. And I'm not sure that it could be reproduced at all from a single slot board. It'd probably be easier to just send the signals directly from your multi, if possible.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I know several of the members here can be much more useful explaining this stuff than I.

Not a deal breaker for most, I don't think, but figured I'd bring it up now rather than later :)

Is there any reason for choosing DDR2 specifically? Just curious as DDR2 is getting pretty pricey these days unless its fully buffered.

That's really interesting, Mattroid. I had no idea. The woodies I've had were pretty shot, so I'm not surprised that they didn't have those. I've owned a Super Neo 29, 2x MVS-U4, and an MVS-U4/33 and not one of them had that. About to receive a Neo-19 in a few weeks, hopefully that one has it, haha.

When I get my system out of storage in a few weeks I can take pictures of necessary, but the game selector is definitely stock. In the self test screens, it'll even say which one is supposed to be lit up. My buddy's 2 slot Goldie as well as my 4 slot Big Red both have them... Granted not a single EL panel works between the six of them, but they're there at least

Will it remember the dip-switch settings of the 4 games loaded into memory, independently of the motherboard (MVS)?
I have the Omega cMVS with UniBIOS... Having to soft-boot constantly to set/reset dip-switches (like with current multi's) is annoying.

I'm a huge fan of this 4-slot emulation idea with a software based menu, I also love that it's split into two boards (MVS and AES).

How are you doing with the "original cart" size/compatibility?
I would love something in an original shell, with a custom label (even include unique serial numbers based on order number). :D

Some ideas for the next multi neo geo (sorry if ideas was already posted) :

- allow to play neo geo CD game on MVS Cartridge (just to the pleasure to play Scotland course on Neo Turf :) )
- as per cps2, boot the cartridge on the last game loaded in the cart and allow this to use in a multimvs 2-4
- and for my dream (but i guess it's impossible) : emulate the rotation of games as per multi slot MVS4 on a slot MVS1 :)
Hello!
The current design concept that I'm testing is the following:

Cartridge with one big FPGA and normal computer DIMMs DDR2, it will be able to hold 4 games. I'm checking if this makes sense from a cost/playbility point of view. If that's the case I can install a battery so it will hold in the DDR the last game loaded for a period of time (similar to mobile phones, so a week or so).

As this can hold 4 games, you can basically switch games like you would on a MVS 4-slot having a normal 1-slot.

What do you guys thinks?
Brilliant! I'm all in for this design, highly looking forward to it. I'm also glad there will be 2 versions for both MVS and AES systems, right Darksoft?

Darksoft, does your earlier claim of "you can play ALL Games, old, new and even your custom hacks." suggest support for games as large as NG:DEV releases, or..?

Mostly curious because I have been debating dropping the dough for one of the Gunlord reprints coming up.

I would not count on the NG:Dev games working with the multicart. Not only because that is piracy (some of the games are still being sold new, as reprints) but also because AFAIK NG:Dev has gone to some extent to make sure their games are not pirated. And it seems to work, since I have not seen the ROM of any NG:Dev game so far (except for Fast Stryker, which used standard SNK boards in the beginning).

Bottom line: get the reprint. You are not only helping a nice development company, but also making sure you get the game you want and all of its goodies.

I was mostly asking because of the comment that it would play new games, and afaik, NG:DEV is the only team who has put out new games. And if it turned out I would have saved $400 by not buying it, I'd have felt pretty stupid.

As stated several times in this thread the design will not allow the NG:DEV games to load. The max size will be restricted to the largest official release.

Thanks. Didn't read through all 25 pages, just some of it. The mention of being able to play new games is why I asked.

Will it have a restriction for Knight's Chance? it's smaller than kof2003 but AFAIK it can be made new again.
afaik, NG:DEV is the only team who has put out new games.
You may want to check the new work that has been done bringing Crossed Swords 2 to MVS/AES format, and the work made by Neobitz, Knight's Chance. Great game, BTW.
