How complicated is the conversion process? Can it be automated, or is it done on a game-to-game basis?
 
Game-by-game basis, special protections and other differences make full automation impossible.

The NeoCPS1 version is working for you ok on the multi?
 
I have converted it on a B-board.
So you have burned all the chips and placed them on a B-board and it works? So it should work fine on the multi as well. Maybe it was converted wrong to multi format.
 
Can the hyper fighting port be burned to roms and played on legit hardware or is multi board the only way?

It works fine for me, but I converted it to the CPS2 multi format myself.

I must give credit to Trap15 for some help with the bg/sprite priority calculation as well as EEPROM reference code.

Thank you for the region info! I'll have a peek at that in the code - it really shouldn't be hard to add to the menu. Does this affect the title screen and win/lose quotes?
 
Capcom use this code on original cps1 when they've released the game.
Program code have just this who change for the three regions.
Change are good on your conversion. title differ, english text... all ok i think.
It's a great idea if you can add it to the menu :)

My only gripes are, cant set the dips in SF2CE and the landing from jump sound is playing the hit fighter landing sound (at least with Blanka)

Not deal breakers. Paypal en route.
