What's new

WTB Candy Cab!!!

Want To Buy
a lot of people Slag off the Pandora but it's cheap, plug & play and most of the games work well enough to keep you occupied for ages.

I've seen a few original panels come up for sale on yahoo auctions.

If they've fitted happ sticks then the hole pattern should match sanwa JLW sticks. Happ buttons are 28mm and Japanese ones are 30mm so you could make them bigger. And use the screw in ones if the panel is thicker than 2mm.

Hey Guys! News flash!

That's awesome, the monitor still looks so nice and bright too!

Details!

Did you get the control panel open?

What ended up being the issue with getting it to run?

Sound working fine?

More photos :)
All that he said.

Now you are OH-fficially in the club.

Thanks guys! Yeah we are both ecstatic that the monitor works and is in great condition. Locks had to be bored out. Here is what the control panel looks like https://goo.gl/photos/2uWZRiBdBdpPP6h29. Will send more updates soon! Sound and everything works! Just have to adjust the monitor position.

That's awesome - the sound and speakers on the Cyber Lead are really good

Hopefully you were careful drilling those locks out, looks like it went off without a hitch though

Nice to see that the memory card readers and hardware are still there, if you don't mind at some point taking a photo of the area underneath the monitor controls I'd be interested to see if the I/O board is still there

xodaraP: Yep, the locks were drilled very carefully, no issues. I will take a picture of that tonight.

Hi Everyone,

We are trying to learn about all our options for games, and we don't necessarily want a Pandora's Box, like I mentioned previously, but had some questions about it before we cross it off our list, because we've been hearing mixed reviews...

It seems like the Pandora's Box 4 comes in two price ranges. One of the boxes that seems to be a knock off is $50 - $60. The other one, which is priced above $115 resembles a Playstation shaped unit and is yellow, it also has that insignia on the corner. Is there a big difference with the cheaper version? Does the cheaper one have more delay/lag with the games? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The 'proper' unit if you want to call it that is the yellow one that looks a bit like a PS4, I assume the knockoffs use cheaper (probably slower) components

They're actually not too bad for what they do and a lot of the games play perfectly fine and most people won't notice the difference

The Pandora's Box is really good if you want a lot of games available to you easily and cheaply, but any games you actually care about (like Marvel vs Street Fighter as you mentioned is important) - get these as real boards. Most Capcom stuff doesn't play properly in MAME, the speed and timing is wrong and it's just better to have originals of the ones you want.

xodaraP: Thanks for the input. Another question I have is, does the Pandora's Box only work with a CPS2? Because currently, we have a CPS1 in there.

Neither, it replaces whatever you have installed.

Think of your cabinet as a TV tube, with a connector dangling off of it. Just a dumb screen, no brains.

If you want to swap games you take out what's on that connector, that's the Jamma connector, and plug in the yellow box. Store your CPS1 or whatever PCB in a safe spot. One at a time.

You have CPS1 in there now right? You'll want a CPS1 to CPS2 kick harness adapter. http://www.jamma-nation-x.com/jammax/store.html

xodaraP: Not entirely sure what pictures you wanted to see, but I took photos of the space right beneath the monitor controls... see photo links and if that's not right, explain in more detail what you would like to see, thanks.

Exactly that, the original amplifier and I/O boards have been removed from that area when they've done the JAMMA conversion, that's ok though I expected that was probably the case, may even be the I/O board failed and that's why it was converted to JAMMA

As far as the games go, it all really comes down to is the game being "emulated" or is it running the original game roms on original hardware.

That is what separates a lot of people who collect these.

The Pandora's Box is not expensive, has lots of games, is quick and simple way to play these games. That's the good part.

But it is emulated, since it is not using the original hardware (the specific computer chips to create the sound, graphics and game play for each game) you may notice things like sounds that are different, slowdown in game play, graphics glitches, controller lag and such. Some people don't notice them, or don't care about them, and that is fine.

But for a lot of us, having played these games in our youth, we want to have the exact same experience of playing the game as a kid. If the sounds are off, or game play slows down, or there are graphics glitches then we will notice them.

That is why this forum exists. Darksoft is creating "multicarts" that take the original game roms and connect directly to the original hardware allowing for an exact game play experience. Thus allowing for us to play these games in their full original glory!

Back in the day, game manufacturers would create a base hardware system, like CPS2, and then have their game developers create games that would run on that specific hardware. Eventually, newer and better hardware would be created, allowing for new games to be created that would only run on that specific hardware. This has been going on since the beginning of arcade games.

What Pandora's Box and other emulated multicarts do is to take a lot of games from different hardware platforms and "make" them all play on one system. So naturally, you will have compromises in certain areas like sound, graphics, controller lag and other things. Some games emulate well, while others are playable, and some are just so bad as to not be playable at all.

Both types of multicarts have their place in the arcade hobby. Casual gamers who don't remember these games may not care that much. But if someone like you and your boyfriend wants to play the "same" game as they did back in the day, the only true way to do that is with original hardware.

But if you were to buy every original CPS2 game board today, you would be spending a huge amount of money, not to mention the time, space and hassle.

Now, enter the Darksoft CPS2 Multicart. Connect it to an original CPS2 board and load any or all of the CPS2 game roms you want and play them faithfully on original hardware. That is gaming goodness!

Darksoft has done the same with the Sega ST-V boardset, and is working on the Neo Geo, Taito F3, and others.

So again, the Pandora's Box is great for what it is, as long as you know what you are getting.

I've only ever had a Pandora 3 and the most glaring fault in that was that the resolution for the games was way off. Everything looked super blurry.

Agreed - Pandora is OK for what it costs, but its still emulation and the CPU isn't quite powerful enough for some games. But unless you want to spend a fortune buying originals or build a MAME PC and spend ages configuring it then its a good compromise.

The Good - loads of games, cheap, no swapping PCB's in/out, you can disable crap games in the menu, some vertical games configured to run on a horizontal monitor.

The Bad - slowdown, screen-tearing & crap sound in some games, its emulation so timings may be a little out compared to real thing, some game resolutions aren't arcade perfect, not JAMMA wired so needs an adapter to work properly, loads of bootleg versions to avoid.

As you have a JAMMA cab with CPS1 kick then the easiest option is to get a Pandora-4 or a Horizontal Game Elf and the JNX ATLAS "JAMMA to Pandora/Elf" adapter for CPS1 and you can use it without changing anything.

As your cab can only play horizontal games (you cannot rotate the monitor in a cyberlead) you need to make sure you only buy PCB's that play on a horizontal monitor (so no Galaxians, space invaders, Ibara, DDP etc.) At least you'll save a fortune not buying Cave shmups.

Personally I'd go for:-

MVS - 1-slot and a x-in-1 cart (or wait for Darksofts multi) as that will keep you going for a long time and 95% of MVS games are horizontal, its my favorite arcade platform.
G-Net - can have it's bios flashed so you can run the games from compact flash cards (for me it was $70 well spent as its got Castle shig, XII Stag and Super bubble bobble).
STV - If any stv games float your boat, again Darksoft's Multi means you can play all the hard to get games.
CPS2 - Darksoft's multi, just avoid playing the vertical games as they'll play sideways.

Then there's always CPS3 and Naomi but they're trickier to get hold of and get working, and when Darksoft releases it the F3 multi - a seriously under-rated platform with some fantastic games on it.

100% of MVS games are horizontal resolution, the vertical shooters like Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings are vertical games but play on a horizontal monitor like 1944 on CPS2 :)
