What's new
Thank @Darksoft for setting us all free from that BS.

I would absolutely love for there to be a no-cd instant change multibios available for cps3...

I also think we're being just a bit hasty... yes the timing is working out this way but certainly we have not exhausted all other avenues. Can we even make a thread in the main cps3 forum asking for people to look for a warzard nocd? Or perhaps there is a way to force it a bit more using the other BIOSes?
I love the idea. Can you please open it?

Thanks!

I tried several times in the past to dump and resolder flashes on live carts. 100% suicide rate. Can't be done.

Also, if someone doesn't want to give up their rare cart for dumping I have zero issues with that. Mine would stay with me until it inevitably died. 'Cause it will die sometime.

I don't want to start any fights over this, I'm just perplexed by the attitude. For the record, as far as I'm concerned, if you own it, it's yours. Do whatever the heck you want with it. Make it into a keyring, place it on a mantle, or put it in a time capsule for your grandkids to dig up in a hundred years.

However, since we're on a public forum, here's my take. Ultimately, it's just data on a cart. @idc said something about us asking him to destroy his cart. Well, I guess. However, you have multiple guys offering him to send a SuperBIOS cart in return. Heck, once it's known how the game can be made into a NoCD cart, a bespoke SuperBIOS can be made for him, which is functionally identical to the original. That can be put on his original cart. What was destroyed again? The encryption key? Really?

And instead of telling people you own this cool thing that is very rare (which personally, I still think you do with the original cart), you can tell people you contributed to this cool project and made it easier for hundreds of other hobbyists to run a game on their setup (by finally ditching those goddamn SCSI drives).

And no, there aren't thousands of these carts any more. I suspect there weren't thousands of them to begin with. If something isn't in Mame by now, it is rare and therefore IMO effort should be made in to preserving it. Even "hounding" people over things.

But that's my two cents. I'll butt out now.

EDIT: (PS. the cart is going to die regardless)

It’s nowhere near analogous to CPS2. CPS3 carts can and will flake out with the most minimal tampering.

Thanks for the clarification guys!

No one wants to fight about it, that's not why we came to this forum (for many of us it's why we left another forum...)

Let's just get one thing straight... it's not greedy or selfish to do anything with your own private possessions. It would be extremely generous to donate something to the cause, but it's not a requirement. Just because you don't understand someone's attachment to a physical item, doesn't mean it has any less value. You are free to "hound" someone but realize you are soliciting. You are asking someone else to give you something of theirs. You are asking for something you have no right to, and still come off with some attitude like it's "the right thing to do." Well it's not your choice. It's not your item. Who is being greedy here? The person who has a private possession or the person who is demanding/asking them to give it up?

I recently had an asia 3s bios cart which I believe has also never been dumped by MAME. However, this doesn't mean as much because there's nothing special about it like the warzard nocd bios. I battled internally whether I should dump the bios on it, or sell it as is. Eventually I decided to sell it as a 3s kit because I had changed the battery on it and it was still living. If it was dead already, I certainly would have tried to dump it. I feel like I made the right choice. It can still be dumped in the future.

Remember this is a 20+ year old game. We are still fanatic about it. We will still love it in a year or two or three. We don't need to rush. We don't need to force people through guilt. Be patient and we will receive all that we need. Just a few years ago many of us collected without any Darksoft safety net.

I'm not saying you can't do what you want with your own private item, of course you can.
But to post something like this?

Look we are still dealing with this pandemic BS here in Boston area...
How would you feel if I purchased every bottle of hand sanitizer, toilet paper, clorox wipe etc?

Let me guess, and say you'd be one of the first to bitch/demand limits be placed!
Why tho? If its not possible to be greedy or selfish, because you have the means/luck/skill/etc that others do not... isn't that a "them" problem?

Apples and oranges you say? No, because this is philosophy (ie beyond physical items).
I'm just perplexed by the attitude
Perplexed is a good word.
And no, there aren't thousands of these carts any more. I suspect there weren't thousands of them to begin with
I also doubt thousands to begin with, lets just assume this IS true however... I say it still wouldn't matter!
Once that cart has suicided, unless you knew for a fact it was a undumped/rare noCD, you aren't going to take the time to desolder/dump it bindly hoping for the best/rare BIOS.

Far more likely (if anything is done period) the chip is desoldered and tossed, as its converted to a DS SuperBIOS.

Completely different. This is not a commodity item anymore. He hasn’t bought them all up. This is more like a piece of art imo.

How about some guy has a Ferrari? I ask him to lend it to me, so I can pull the engine apart and document how it works.

It will ruin the engine beyond repair, but he doesn’t have to worry. I’ll replace it with another engine from a kit car my mate Pablo put together from some Ferrari bits, and some other bits. It will be‘functionally equivalent’. It will do some things a bit differently, but it’s basically the same, right?

I’d be very surprised if the guy didn’t tell me to straight up get fucked.

Hoarding arcade games isn’t like hoarding vital commodities during a pandemic. It’s nothing like those assholes who bought up shit tons of hand sanitiser with the intention of flipping it for a profit. No, we’re talking about someone who has a specific version of a specific game. One cart.

And while I’m a very, very, big advocate of releasing information into the public domain, attempting to coerce someone to literally sacrifice something they own, so it can be released publicly (or more specifically so you can have a copy for yourself), is more selfish than them saying ‘sorry, but no’.

I’d love to see the BIOS dumped, I really would, but it should either be from a cart that has already died, or it must be offered up by an owner who has done so under their own volition.

This should be done, but to nobody’s detriment.

You want to compare a car with a cheap PCB with high price because speculation. Funny.

I don’t particularly want to, no. But it’s better than comparing it to a commodity, like hand sanitiser. It’s a luxury item which has an arbitrary market value.

The usefulness of analogies is lost when people dissect them for any possibility of misinterpretation. It doesn't matter what reasons a person has... their property is theirs to do with whatever they wish. the monetary value doesn't matter here imo... on principle. Because this is a rare thing still kept alive, it should absolutely be kept alive for as long as possible.

What if one day the secret to restoring cps3 keys on carts is revealed only because this living red earth nocd cart wasn't tampered with... and someone was faithful enough to change the batteries on it and keep it going. I don't expect that is the case... but what if.

People are so concerned with whether or not they can have a perfect solution darksoft multi cps3, they're blinded by it. There are other options guys... There is a very wide world of arcade game operators and collectors out there, and this A-P community is only one thin slice. We should keep looking for a dead cart or someone who doesn't feel like they need their living cart.

But it’s better than comparing it to a commodity, like hand sanitiser.
I wasn't comparing it, I was asking @KaPH33n a question intended to show this/his statement...
it's not greedy or selfish to do anything with your own private possessions
Is totally incorrect.
Again, not saying a person hasn't got the freedom to be greedy or selfish but let's not deny its existence on the basis that he is allowed to be these things.

Yes, because collectors has some mental illness.
There could indeed be a fine line between collecting and hoarding. :)

The point I’m getting at here though is that right now, commodities such as sanitiser during a pandemic, or food and water, must be bought, sold, shared, and used fairly and responsibly. They are needed.

Luxury goods, whether they’re video games or sports cars, are just that. Nobody really needs them, but people want them, and it’s for one principle reason. It’s pride of ownership.

Asking someone to give up that pride, while offering them something that is different to what they wanted when they bought it, is not right.

If @GoldenGlover says he’s happy to give up the cart when it dies, which it surely will at some point, then accept that. If he wants to sell it before it dies, then maybe one of the few who are pressuring him to give it up will buy it for the right price, and they can sacrifice it instead. :)

I'm pretty sure most 3rd Strike tournaments these days are played on SuperBIOS carts, so by your analogy people are holding official Ferrari races with "Ferrari cars built haphazardly from kit car parts".

That's a hot take.

like I said the usefulness of the ferrari analogy is lost if you pick it apart. idc explained what his intention was, to say it's more like a luxury item than a commodity.

It doesn't matter what most 3s tournament are played on. It doesn't matter if there was or was not a DS superbios. We're getting at the core of protecting personal property and freedom.

I think you’re putting too much thought into my analogy, nem. ;)

I was simply offering an alternative analogy with respect to hoarding.

Is it really possible to hoard luxury items?

Hoarding of water during a drought is bad for everyone. It’s an indisputable dick move.

Hoarding of luxury items is bad only for other hoarders.

As with most analogies! And CPS3 carts. :D

@idc Really trying to stay out of this thread, but you hit the nail on the head. It's my cart and my choice.

Hey, guess what! It's still working on battery today! It was operational for 24 years before I did my battery swap, and the 2019 date-coded Tadiran I put on it will keep it going for at least another 5 years until I change it again. I'm really not sorry if this bothers any of you & you can't have a perfect NoCD SuperBIOS setup because I happened to acquire & won't part with the Capcom grail equivalent of a winning lottery ticket.

None of you know how long I've been looking for this (20 years off and on). We got into this hobby to enjoy the games we grew up/entertain ourselves with.

Some of you on this thread are acting like more of a "collector" than I actually am. Many of you have full machines, floor to ceiling game rooms of boards, games, consoles, monitors, etc. I currently have 6 PCBs. I actually play my games for enjoyment. This is strictly a hobby for me & I've always loved Capcom games. I am privately a huge fan of Capcom and anything that's come from them during the golden era of arcades (pretty much anything before 2000-2001). Hence why I'm on this site.

If you want to hate on the fact that I am a preservationist & am holding onto this for a while, well, you have much larger problems than I do.

I thought sharing what I had with this community would be a cool thing to do. I'm starting to regret doing that now.

By the way, about this "giving back to your "community" crap": back in 2000-2001, I was one of the first donors to CPS2Shock (my username was Flashpant, it's on his donor page) & I donated a Jap Vampire Savior board at a time when he was starting out. I know Raz gets dumped on, but even doing that donation way back when kept his interest alive & resulted in enough interest to get CPS2 (and then later CPS3) cracked. If me & others didn't initially donate when people were trying to crack Capcom encryption, we wouldn't have this messageboard today to hear people bitch and moan on about not having NoCD Warzard in the SuperBIOS.

Sorry, but no.
